Calypso : the right choice for interoperability
Interoperability is a major issue for ticketing systems since a growing number of passengers both inside and outside European borders like to travel in comfort and appreciate coherent services, simplified fare management and seamless transport changes without involving any special effort. The development of new form factors including NFC mobile phones and smartphones will increase the need for such services.
Among all parameters that will make
interoperability easier, international standardization is an essential step
towards a mutual understanding of differing heterogeneous systems.
Calypso is well on the path to meeting this
normative approach and meanwhile supplies all the requirements to a real
interoperability through the seven layers of its transaction framework.
After the successful Calypso open session in december , Philippe Vappereau, Calypso Networks Association 's chairman summerize the key points of the developement of ticheting in 2010 and reveals the main objectives of the asociation for 2011 . He analyzes the situation of Calypso in the market and gives his opinion about the OSPT initiative.
Today, trials are constantly taking place all over
the world with use of new devices to access daily living services: NFC mobile
phones, Java cards, contactless USB keys are tomorrow a foreseen medium that
will be present in everyone’s pockets to access a wide range of services. Among
them, transport access plays a major role since the customer’s media (portable
object) will be frequently used by the user, and will allow him/her to load and
validate a transport application, buy some contracts and renew them
independently.

CALYPSO NETWORKS ASSOCIATION is
supporting technical working groups in order to contribute to
international standardization process or to facilitate the deployment
of tickting systems. In 2010 some of them have been completed.
The final WP 1.1
document gives a full set of recommendations to terminal
manufacturers in order to meet the latest Calypso specification rev
3.1 requirements.
The final WP 1.2
document is a reference guideline on how to implement Calypso inside
a ticketing system architecture.
The WP9 has listed
the discrepancies between ISO 14443 and EMVCo protocols and studied
the possibility to rely on EMVCo Level 1 Type approval as a
certification scheme for the contactless communication level.
